International Partnerships

While CCSA's primary focus is Canada, we have always contributed to international drug policy. One part of CCSA's purpose, as written into our parliamentary mandate, is to promote awareness of international efforts to reduce alcohol and drug abuse and support Canada's participation in those efforts. The following paragraphs describe some of our international partnerships.

CCSA and the United Nations

CCSA has represented Canada at the United Nations (UN) and attended annual meetings with the Commission on Narcotic Drugs (CND) since the early 1990s when CCSA was invited by Health Canada to be part of the Canadian delegation.

CCSA and the Vienna NGO Committee on Drugs

Canada accepted a major role on the global drug strategy stage in December 2010, when CCSA CEO Michel Perron was invited to chair the Vienna NGO Committee on Drugs (VNGOC). This appointment followed CCSA's vital role in organizing Beyond 2008, an international forum that brought together NGOs from around the world.

CCSA and the Inter-American Drug Abuse Control Commission

Senior leaders at CCSA attend the Inter-American Drug Abuse Control Commission (CICAD) to discuss drug policy among the Organization of American States (OAS). CICAD's core mission is to enhance the capacity of its member states to reduce the production, trafficking and use of illegal drugs, and to address the health, social and criminal consequences of the drug trade.
