Supporting Treatment Systems

Innovative work is taking place across Canada to improve the quality, accessibility and range of options for addressing substance abuse, guided by the recommendations for a national treatment strategy developed by the Canadian Centre on Substance Use and Addiction (CCSA).

Treatment efforts are often subject to provincial and territorial laws. Because of physical and regulatory boundaries, opportunities for information sharing and learning can be missed.

To overcome these boundaries, CCSA works with provincial and territorial partners to facilitate communication and collaboration to improve substance use treatment services for all Canadians.

Facilitating knowledge exchange

  • CCSA regularly hosts knowledge exchange webinars and facilitates meetings among stakeholders across the country. These meetings include sessions to discuss government funding streams, such as the Drug Treatment Funding Program, and related opportunities.

  • CCSA collaborates with federal, provincial and territorial partners to produce the National Treatment Indicators Report, which provides a national picture of the use by Canadians of publicly funded substance use and gambling treatment services.

  • To guide the field in developing comprehensive and consistent treatment services, CCSA developed the Systems Approach Workbook, a collection of online modules to help manage change in treatment systems in Canada.

Partners putting the Systems Approach into practice

The Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) has adapted the tiered model of the Systems Approach to suit Ontario’s Mental Health and Addictions Strategy. See CAMH’s System Improvement through Service Collaboratives. Also read the case study, Open Minds, Healthy Minds.

Alberta Health and Wellness has leveraged the Systems Approach to improve access to and coordination of services throughout Alberta. Read the case study, Creating Connections: Alberta’s Addictions and Mental Health Action Plan.
